What vaccinations are required for Tambopata?

Before traveling to Puerto Maldonado or other places in the Peruvian Amazon, visit a health care provider specializing in Travel Medicine who can tell you which vaccinations are recommended based on your health and vaccination history. It is best to consult this physician 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to allow time for vaccinations to take effect. You should mention each country you are visiting on your trip to receive appropriate advice for all your travel destinations. While there are no mandatory vaccinations for travel to Peru, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has the following recommendations:

Hepatitus A: Vaccination is recommended for all travelers to Peru.
Hepatitus B: Vaccination recommended for all travelers to Peru, especially those who may be exposed to blood or body fluids when giving or receiving medical care, drug injections, tattooing, or sexual contact with the local population.
Typhoid fever: Vaccination is recommended for all travelers to tropical South America, especially those staying in rural areas where exposure through food or water could occur.

Yellow fever: Vaccination is highly recommended for travel to the Amazon and the southern Amazon basin. Vaccination should be given at least 10 days prior to arrival and at 10-year intervals if you decide to stay.
Rabia: Vaccination is ONLY recommended for travelers at increased risk of exposure, including long-term travelers living in an area that presents a high risk of exposure, travelers working in occupations that will have direct contact with bats, stray dogs and cats or other mammals such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals or researchers.

What is the climate like in Tambopata?

The climate of Puerto Maldonado is tropical humid with high temperatures throughout the year, although especially August and September, to this is added the wind chill that sometimes touches about 45 ° C. In most months of the year in Puerto Maldonado there is significant rainfall, especially from October to April. The average annual temperature in Puerto Maldonado is 25.4 °C (77.4 °F). Rainfall is around 2221 mm. During the winter can occasionally occur the so-called friajes that are cold air masses from Antarctica that manage to lower the temperature even below 10 ° C. Always travel with cold weather clothing even if you are going to warm areas.

Transportation

There are several good quality bus companies that offer sleeper seats and meals on board, such as Moviltours, Excluciva, Maldonado Tours, among others.
To travel to the jungle it is best to travel by plane. Daily flights are 90 minutes from Lima (with a stopover in Cusco). The airlines that fly to Puerto Maldonado are LATAM and Skype. We recommend, both inbound and outbound, flights arriving before or until noon.
Most of the transfers from the city of Puerto Maldonado to the campsites are by land by car and by river with typical outboard motor boats.

Is it necessary to carry cash?

The services of bar, boutique or any additional services are not included in the price of your program. Payment is in cash in soles, dollars or euros, and if you do not have cash you can withdraw from the ATM in the city.

We recommend that you carry cash in small bills and coins to facilitate the payment of extra services in the camp.

¿Habrá agua potable durante el tour?

Due to the high humidity in the environment we recommend drinking plenty of liquids: water or infusions. The Camp will have bottles of drinking water so you can refill your bottle or canteen (to be more respectful with the environment we recommend bringing your own canteen and thus we will not consume drinks that are bottled in single-use plastic bottles). The water from the taps is not suitable for drinking, but it is suitable for cleaning.

Is smoking allowed?

Smoking is permitted in outdoor areas.

Please DO NOT smoke inside your tent, in the dining room, on the boat and during excursions.

About the excursions

The excursions are detailed in the different programs, with established schedules that can be modified in coordination with the guide. The reasons that may cause any change will be the weather or willingness of the guests. In this case the guest will have to fill out a “no activity” form duly signed to endorse his decision.

Observación de flora y fauna

Amazon bound has as a priority to carry out its activities in the middle of the jungle and its main excursions are inside the protected natural areas where there are a lot of animals living in the wild. This means that there is a high probability of observing all kinds of fauna following the guide’s instructions, but it is also possible that due to their nature, these animals cannot be seen.

Feeding

Our food is very varied with fusion dishes, from different regions mostly local. If you have any specific dietary requirements (diet, vegetarian, vegan, allergies, intolerances, etc…) please do not hesitate to let us know in advance.

Power supply and lighting

Peru operates on 220 volts. It is recommended to bring your own converter and adapter if possible. A flashlight is always necessary, especially in the jungle.

We have a generator that runs for 2 hours only in camp number (1) to recharge batteries and electronic devices.

In the camps it is recommended to bring a solar charger or extra batteries, because the use of an electric generator is not allowed.

The lighting of the camp will be with candles and battery-operated spotlights.

Insurance and accidents

In case of emergencies we have a first aid kit that is equipped to deal with minor cases that may arise in the area. In case of complex emergencies, an evacuation will be necessary, we will have to travel to Puerto Maldonado by the nearest route where there is access to a state clinic. Emergency expenses are not included in the reservation and must be covered by the traveler.

Since all nature activities are exposed to natural risks, before starting our service you will sign a commitment form “I release you from all liability whether financial, criminal or civil in respect of any accident or injury that I may suffer in my person due to negligence, carelessness or recklessness incurred during the trip and the stay in the camp”.
