One of them is the Macaw, a bird of beautiful and colorful plumage, there are many travelers who travel days, hours to observe the behavior and witness the magnificent colors of these birds, which can be observed in the famous or known “Collpas or Colpas”.

What is the Collpa / Macaw Clay Lick?

A clay lick or colpa is a gathering point for macaws that are formed on the banks of rivers as a result of erosion processes with the peculiar characteristic of being soils rich in mineral salts, perfect not only for BIRDS but also for mammals.

The surprising thing is the number of flocks and species that gather at the same point, giving us a colorful spectacle, with fluttering, squawking and screeching. Be sure to keep quiet and stay in hiding, don’t scare them away!

The macaw clay licks are distributed in different parts of the Peruvian jungle, the most outstanding are the macaw clay licks of Puerto Maldonado – Madre de Dios, department where is located the NATURAL RESERVE OF TAMBOPATA and MANU NATIONAL PARK, recognized as the protected area of greatest biological diversity in the world by Unesco and as a paradise for birds.

Puerto Maldonado

Macaw Clay Lick – CHUNCHO
The Chuncho clay lick is the most famous, located in the Tambopata National Reserve. With different species of Macaws of different colors and sizes, with dozens and dozens of birds, accompanied by a symphony of sound and colorful presentation.
This clay lick is about 4 meters high and 100 meters long, at the edge of an arm of the Tambopata River, we can see green and red macaws, the largest in Peru.

Macaw Clay Lick – COLORADO
Also located in the Tambopata Natural Reserve. This clay lick is about 50 meters high and 300 meters long, being considered the largest clay lick in the Peruvian Amazon, being able to identify up to 6 different species of macaws.

Macaw Clay Lick – SIETE GALLINAS
Also located in the Tambopata Natural Reserve. This clay lick is about 6 meters high and 400 meters long, being considered one of the largest clay lick in the Peruvian Amazon, being able to identify up to 4 to 5 different species of macaws.
